Network Walkman

Network Walkman in 2008

A guide introducing Sony's Network Walkman product line in 2008. A year in which product strategy was redefined.

In 2008, product specifications and pricing were readjusted based on market needs. The functionality has been modified to ensure reliability and suitability for everyday use.

NWZ-B135F

NWZ-B135F

The NWZ-B135F is an updated entry-level B Series Network Walkman with FM capabilities. It carries the direct-USB simplicity of the line into the next year. It offers 2 GB of storage for MP3 and WMA files along with an LCD display, FM radio with recording, direct USB connection, ZAPPIN quick-search, and 18-hour lithium-ion battery life. This unit belonged to Sony's budget B Series at the point when the line had become almost aggressively straightforward. This was not a branch built around prestige or polish. It was built around simplicity: direct USB behavior, FM radio, low friction, and just enough storage to be useful without pretending to be special. The B Series showed Sony understanding that the Walkman did not always need to be framed as a premium object or a lifestyle statement.

NWZ-E436F

NWZ-E436F

The NWZ-E436F is the higher-capacity overseas E Series model with FM radio and multimedia features. It followed the same platform as the E435F. With 8 GB of internal storage it handled MP3, AAC, and WMA playback along with the LCD display, FM radio, WM-PORT, video and photo capabilities, Clear Audio Technology, and 45-hour lithium-ion battery life. This Walkman model was the most representative version of the generation in actual use. It kept the same screen-first identity and FM-equipped usability without trying to behave like a premium branch. The E436F reflected the point when Sony was allowing the E Series to feel a little richer without losing its place as the more accessible general-purpose Walkman line.

NWZ-B133

NWZ-B133

The NWZ-B133 is the basic 1 GB entry-level B Series Network Walkman. It emphasized direct USB simplicity and ZAPPIN quick-search. It features 1 GB of internal storage supporting MP3 and WMA files, an LCD display for track details, direct USB connection, ZAPPIN functionality, and an 18-hour lithium-ion battery. This unit came from the period where Sony had fully accepted that the budget Walkman branch should feel almost frictionless. Direct USB transfer, compact size, and minimal interface complexity were the real point here, not prestige or feature density. The B133 was a player designed around convenience and low commitment, which made it feel very different from the more curated or software-defined Sony portable audio products that came before it.

NWZ-B135

NWZ-B135

The NWZ-B135 is the 2 GB step-up model in the entry-level B Series Network Walkman lineup. It retained the same simple direct-USB and ZAPPIN approach. It provides 2 GB of flash storage supporting MP3 and WMA playback along with an LCD display, direct USB transfer, ZAPPIN quick-search, and 18-hour lithium-ion battery. This Walkman model belonged firmly to the "simple on purpose" side of Sony's Walkman history but with a little more breathing room than the smaller-capacity B133. This line was never about aspiration. It was about lowering the barrier to entry while still keeping the player recognizably Sony and easy to live with.

NW-E025F

NW-E025F

The NW-E025F is the mid-capacity model in the ninth-generation E Series Network Walkman family. It emphasized the same interchangeable Style-Up Panel customization. With 2 GB of flash storage it supports MP3, WMA, and AAC playback along with FM radio, the detachable front panel system, direct USB transfer, and 30-hour lithium-ion battery life. This unit kept the same tiny body, FM radio, color display, USB charging, and swappable styling panels while feeling just large enough to be practical without losing the "throw it in your pocket and forget it" appeal. The E025F reflected the point when Sony had become very good at making tiny Walkman that no longer felt compromised or half-finished. It belonged to the late mature phase of the compact E branch, where the product's strength came from how little friction it imposed.

NW-A828

NW-A828

The NW-A828 is the base model in the fourth-generation A Series Network Walkman family. It succeeded the A800 generation while borrowing heavily from the A910 feature set but without OneSeg television. It offers 8 GB of storage supporting ATRAC, MP3, WMA, and AAC files along with an LCD that delivers improved color reproduction, Bluetooth, noise cancellation, video and photo playback, Clear Audio Technology, and 36-hour lithium-ion battery life. By this point the A Series had finally settled into a clear premium flash Walkman identity. Earlier models had spent years negotiating whether they inherited the HDD branch, acted as miniature media flagships, or simply replaced higher-end flash players. The confusion had mostly cleared. The A828 delivers a polished late-2000s Sony portable with a capable screen, video support, Bluetooth, and cleaner overall package that made the line feel contemporary and far less transitional.

NW-A829

NW-A829

The NW-A829 is the mid-capacity model in the fourth-generation A Series Network Walkman lineup. It features 16 GB of internal storage supporting ATRAC, MP3, WMA, and AAC files. The player includes the generation's Bluetooth and noise-cancellation additions along with an LCD offering enhanced color reproduction, video and photo functions, Clear Audio Technology, and 36-hour lithium-ion battery life. The A829 struck the most naturally balanced note in the A82x generation. By then the A Series had stopped feeling restless and had become one of Sony's cleanest late-classic Walkman branches: premium enough to feel distinct yet still compact and focused. It showed Sony finally delivering a premium flash Walkman that felt fully resolved for its time, stylish, media-capable, wireless-friendly, and straightforward without needing a long explanation.

NWZ-A826

NWZ-A826

The NWZ-A826 is the overseas 4 GB model in the fourth-generation A Series successor family. It adopted the same Bluetooth and video/photo platform. The player offers 4 GB storage supporting MP3, WMA, AAC, and ATRAC files with 36-hour lithium-ion battery life alongside Bluetooth, video and photo playback. This model was the globally branded counterpart to that same premium flash A generation. The A Series was finally behaving like a proper modern late-2000s flagship Walkman instead of a line still dragging around leftover SonicStage baggage. Bluetooth, video playback, and a polished interface made the player feel current in a way some earlier A models had struggled to achieve.

NWZ-S639F

NWZ-S639F

The NWZ-S639F is the highest-capacity 16 GB overseas model in the sixth-generation S Series Network Walkman lineup. It incorporated the full set of unified design and Omakase Channel features. The player provides 16 GB storage supporting MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAV files along with the 240x320 TFT display, FM radio with recording, WM-PORT, video and photo playback, Clear Audio, DSEE, and 40-hour lithium-ion battery life. This Walkman model was the fullest version of that late-2000s settled S Series idea. By this point Sony had largely solved the line's identity problem. The player no longer felt like a side branch still looking for a job. The S639F came from the point when Sony finally made the S Series feel like a natural permanent part of the Walkman hierarchy instead of a category experiment.

NW-S636FK

NW-S636FK

The NW-S636FK is a speaker-equipped variant of the sixth-generation S Series base model. It added external audio output to the Omakase Channel and unified design. The player offers 4 GB storage for MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAV files along with the 240x320 LCD, FM radio with recording, speaker support, video and photo playback, Clear Audio Technology, and 40-hour lithium-ion battery life. This player extended a stable Walkman line into a compact accessory ecosystem once the core player no longer needed conceptual reinvention. The speaker package simply made it more casual, more portable, and a little more all-in-one without trying to redefine the S line.

NW-S638F

NW-S638F

The NW-S638F is the 8 GB model in the sixth-generation S Series Network Walkman lineup. It carries the same unified card-style design and Omakase Channel introduction. With 8 GB of internal storage it handled MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAV playback along with the 240x320 LCD display, FM radio with recording, video and photo feature, Clear Audio Technology, and 40-hour lithium-ion battery life. This unit was a middle-capacity, very representative example of the S Series after it had become a stable and broadly appealing compact Walkman branch. Sony could stretch the line across markets and packages without weakening the identity or making the whole thing feel messy again.

NW-S638FK

NW-S638FK

The NW-S638FK added speaker support to the 8 GB sixth-generation S Series model. It retained the full unified design and Omakase Channel capabilities. The player features 8 GB storage supporting MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAV files along with the 240x320 LCD, FM radio with recording, speaker output, video and photo playback, Clear Audio Technology, and 40-hour lithium-ion battery life. This model is a side branch of a stable platform. Sony is not trying to redefine the S line here; it was simply extending an already successful form that no longer needed overexplaining.

NW-S736F

NW-S736F

The NW-S736F is a noise-cancelling model in the sixth-generation S Series. It combined isolation with the generation's Omakase Channel and unified card-style body. The player provides 4 GB storage supporting MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAV files along with the 240x320 LCD display, FM radio with recording, noise cancellation, video and photo playback, Clear Audio Technology, Omakase Channel, and 40-hour lithium-ion battery life. This player continued the same polished late-classic S identity where Sony was maintaining a strong and readable branch instead of trying to invent one. The S line had become a very natural middle ground inside Sony's flash Walkman range, which is why so many of these models felt calmer than the ones that came before them.

NW-S738F

NW-S738F

The NW-S738F is the 8 GB noise-cancelling variant in the sixth-generation S Series Network Walkman lineup. It integrated the full set of generation-defining features. With 8 GB of internal storage it handled MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAV playback along with the 240x320 LCD, FM radio with recording, noise cancellation, video and photo capabilities, Clear Audio Technology, Omakase Channel, and 40-hour lithium-ion battery life. This unit was a very balanced expression of the mature S73x family. The line had already figured itself out and this model benefited more from that stability than from any one individual feature. Sony was simply keeping a good idea alive without overcomplicating it.

In 2008, the product was redefined to have a structure suitable for limited applications. This structure was subsequently applied to next-generation products.
