Before flash memory became dominant, Sony explored hard-disk storage in its Network Walkman lineup. The HD Series introduced the format with ATRAC-focused playback and shock-protected drives, while later A Series models merged hard disk and flash into a unified platform with broader codec support and OLED displays. These models represent a short but important transition period where capacity, software ecosystem, and device identity were all being redefined.
