The MZ-N1 is the first portable recorder to feature NetMD and extend MiniDisc recording to PC connectivity. It allows direct transfer of compressed audio from a PC via USB connection, reducing the need for real-time recording in many situations. MDLP allows for extended recording time, and ATRAC Type-R supports sound quality in standard recording mode. Microphone input, line input, and optical digital input are also maintained, allowing for the combined use of conventional recording methods and PC-based transfer. Connection is made via a dedicated docking cradle that serves both as USB access and charging.
The MZ N1 marked the point when MiniDisc finally worked smoothly with a computer. A USB port and full NetMD support brought faster than real time transfers to a familiar folded magnesium body shaped with a camcorder style Jog Dial and small dome buttons. NetMD shaped the entire experience, bringing MiniDisc into the computer era while carrying over all of OpenMG's constraints.
Sony advertised speeds up to 32 times faster in long play modes. The number was generous, but the jump from live dubbing was real. OpenMG Jukebox still managed every move, and its one way system and fragile library pushed many users to test the limits of the workflow.
Inside, the N1 carried Type S ATRAC, long play recording, mic and line inputs, and dependable battery life from a gumstick cell with an AA pack for backup. The RM MC11EL remote handled most daily control. Sony placed the recorder next to laptops in ads, framing it as a pocket sized link between portable sound and early digital routines.
NetMD shaped the entire experience, bringing MiniDisc into the computer era while carrying over all of OpenMG's constraints. The WM-EX921 brought cassette Walkman design into the early 2000s with a jog lever built into the body for faster control. It shipped with a backlit remote, a charging stand, and reached up to 45 hours of playback using only its rechargeable cell.
