Discman

Discman in 1988

A guide introducing Sony's Discman product line in 1988. The year it became established as an alternative to cassette players.

In 1988, multiple configurations were introduced to suit different uses and price ranges. The design, which prioritizes operability and stability, has expanded its range of applications.

D-20

D-20

The D-20 is the model where the Discman line started to feel systematized instead of improvised. A compact, stripped-back portable with simple controls and a slim body for its era, it focused on reliable playback and became the mechanical base for multiple related variants released around the same time. Sony had reached the point when it could stop treating every portable CD player like a separate engineering event. The D-20 is part of the moment when the line started behaving closer to a proper product family, with one core platform branching into tuner, remote, and trim-level variations. That tells you a lot about where Discman had arrived by 1988.

D-40

D-40

The D-40 continued along the same path as the D-20 but leaned further into refinement. The chassis remained compact and straightforward, yet the finishing and detailing felt more considered, hinting at the growing separation between entry-level machines and the more polished middle of the range. The line had already stopped chasing a single ideal of portability by then. Some buyers wanted the smallest thing possible, while others wanted something that simply felt a little better made and easier to live with. The D-40 sits comfortably in that second category.

D-88

D-88

The D-88 is a portable CD player with a compact chassis that supports playback of 12cm and 8cm CDs. Its size is smaller than the disc diameter, and when playing a 12cm CD, part of the disc is exposed at the outer edge. Playback is limited to that of a standard CD player, and it lacks vibration damping. Its design prioritizes miniaturization, resulting in a unique chassis with physical constraints.

D-150

D-150

The D-150 is a portable CD player with improved vibration resistance and power supply configuration. It features an early shock protection mechanism to reduce skipping during playback. The power supply system has been revised, improving portability. Playback remains within the range of a standard CD player and uses basic controls. The improved vibration resistance positions this model for portable use.

In 1988, portable CDs became a practical design. However, the limitations imposed by the disk structure remained.
