In 2006, the operating system and interface design were improved based on actual use. The design has been modified to simplify user operation.
NWD-B103
The NWD-B103 is an entry-level model in Sony's B Series flash-memory Network Walkman lineup. It focused on straightforward, budget-oriented digital audio playback without extra features. It offers 1 GB of internal storage and supports MP3 and WMA files. Transfers happened via direct USB connection straight to a computer, while a lithium-ion battery delivers up to 18 hours of playback. The beginning of Sony's budget B Series, and one of the clearest examples of the company deliberately stripping the Walkman down to its most basic modern function. This was not a line built around status or premium presentation. It was built around accessibility. It reflects the point when Sony understood that not every flash Walkman needed to be stylized or identity-driven.
NW-E002
The NW-E002 belonged to the seventh-generation E Series Network Walkman family. These compact players adopted a crystal-inspired body shaped like a USB memory stick. It comes with 512 MB of flash storage and supports MP3, ATRAC, ATRAC3, ATRAC3plus, WMA, and AAC files. An OLED display showed track information, the lithium-ion battery lasted up to 28 hours, and files transferred directly via USB. This is part of the clearest USB-stick Walkman and shows Sony shifting the E Series into a more direct, almost gadget-like form of portability. Unlike the softer Beans-era players before it, the E002 leaned into compactness and everyday carry simplicity that felt much closer to the USB memory devices people were already carrying. The broad codec support made the player noticeably less rigid and more compatible than earlier generations.
NW-E003
The NW-E003 is the mid-capacity variant in the seventh-generation E Series Network Walkman lineup. It shared the same crystal-designed USB-stick form as the rest of the family. With 1 GB of internal flash memory, it played MP3, ATRAC, ATRAC3, ATRAC3plus, WMA, and AAC files. The OLED display, direct USB transfer, and 28-hour lithium-ion battery remained unchanged. The middle-capacity version of the USB-stick E Series redesign is probably the most representative model of that family in actual day-to-day use. What made this generation work was the overall shift in attitude: smaller, simpler, more direct, and less visually self-conscious than the more playful designs that came right before it. The E Series had become practical again.
NW-E005
The NW-E005 is a high-capacity Network Walkman part of the 7th generation E series. It has 2GB of built-in flash memory and supports audio playback in MP3, ATRAC, ATRAC3, ATRAC3plus, WMA, and AAC formats. It features an OLED display and is powered by a lithium-ion battery.
NW-E002F
The NW-E002F is the FM-equipped overseas variant of the base seventh-generation E Series Network Walkman. It kept the crystal-inspired USB-stick body and added radio reception. The player provides 512 MB of flash storage for MP3, ATRAC, ATRAC3, ATRAC3plus, WMA, and AAC files. An OLED display, direct USB transfer, and 28-hour lithium-ion battery were standard. The FM-equipped overseas branch of the USB-stick E generation added radio to make an already compact and practical player feel more self-sufficient in daily use. In a device this compact and direct, FM radio fits naturally because it reinforces the idea that the player should still be useful even when it is not tethered to your library.
NW-E003F
The NW-E003F is the FM-equipped overseas version in the seventh-generation E Series Network Walkman range. It uses the same crystal-designed USB memory-stick shape as its siblings. With 1 GB of internal storage, it supports MP3, ATRAC, ATRAC3, ATRAC3plus, WMA, and AAC playback. The OLED display and 28-hour lithium-ion battery paired with direct USB connectivity and FM radio. The middle-capacity FM variant of the USB-stick E family best captures why these overseas radio branches existed. The underlying player was already compact and easy to live with. FM simply made it feel more complete as an everyday-carry object. By this point the E Series was no longer trying to enforce a very specific vision of digital music. It was trying to be useful.
NW-S203F
The NW-S203F is a mid-capacity Network Walkman with an FM tuner, part of the third-generation S series. It has 1GB of built-in flash memory and supports audio playback in MP3, WMA, AAC, and ATRAC3plus formats. It features a single-line monochrome OLED display and is powered by a lithium-ion battery.
NW-S703F
The NW-S703F is a premium noise-cancelling variant in the fourth-generation S Series Network Walkman lineup. It built on the Clear Audio Technology introduction with added isolation for active listening. The player offers 1 GB storage for ATRAC3plus, MP3, WMA, and AAC files. A color OLED display, voice/FM recording (via cable), noise cancellation, WM-PORT, and 45-hour lithium-ion battery were included. The beginning of the noise-cancelling branch within the same S Series transition. Instead of feeling like a sporty accessory, this model was Sony trying to build a compact personal listening device with a more premium edge. Noise cancellation changes what kind of use Sony is prioritizing.
In 2006, the design shifted from a technology-centric approach to a structure that prioritized usability. This structure was subsequently applied to subsequent models.
