The D-E404 stayed close to the D-E400 formula, keeping the same compact body, ESP2 buffering, and straightforward feature set with only minor adjustments to interface and presentation. It remained a simple two-AA player built around dependable playback instead of variation for its own sake.
This kind of continuity had become normal by the late 1990s. The D-E404 is part of the part of the line where a stable low-cost template had already been established and only needed to be maintained instead of reworked. It does exactly that.
