MZ-R90

The MZ-R90 is a flagship MiniDisc recorder that maintains recording capabilities while achieving a smaller body size. Optical and analog recording share a single input, and it also supports voice recording via a dedicated microphone input. Its low-power internal design ensures efficiency during long periods of operation, and the headphone and line outputs are integrated into a single terminal via a switchable output. Operation is centered around a jog-based interface and remote control system, and it supports track name input, CD title transfer, and on-unit editing. It features a magnesium top shell.

The MZ-R90 marked a major reduction in size for Sony's MiniDisc recorders, introducing a redesigned mechanism that brought the format into true jacket-size portability. It represented a shift from compact recorders toward fully minimized designs without abandoning recording capability.

A new low-power control chip, compact laser coupler, smaller optical head, and DRAM-equipped IC allowed the internal layout to shrink significantly. The pickup occupied roughly half the area and less weight than earlier mechanisms, while overall volume dropped to around three-quarters of the MZ-R55.

This reduction enabled a thinner and lighter body while maintaining structural stability. The revised drive system improved efficiency by increasing disc rotation speed and reducing motor load, allowing longer operating times.

Recording approached fourteen hours on internal power, with extended playback when paired with an external AA battery. The MZ-R90 brought MiniDisc recording into true jacket-size form, establishing ultra-compact recorders as the next stage of the format's evolution.
