WM-E40ST

Fashion Design
WM-E40ST

The WM-E40ST is a stylized playback-only cassette Walkman that leaned into surface design through blue marble and carbon-pattern finishes, giving the machine a look closer to the fashion-oriented Widdit branch than to Sony's plainer mainstream players. Underneath that, it remained a practical cassette machine with auto-reverse playback, Dolby B noise reduction, and Groove bass enhancement in a compact plastic body powered by standard batteries. The hardware was familiar; the outer identity was not.

This model is a very late-1990s Sony move. The E40ST is interesting less because it changes the cassette formula and more because it suggests visual variation had become one of the remaining ways to keep the category fresh.
