WM-EX39

The WM-EX39 is a midrange EX-series playback Walkman that stood out mainly through its front-door sound controls, which placed adjustable low and high tone shaping directly under the user's hand instead of burying it behind presets or switches. It combined that with auto-reverse playback, Dolby B noise reduction, anti-rolling support, Mega Bass, and Sony's auto volume limiting system inside a two-AA plastic body with visible cassette window and manual tape selection. The whole machine stayed ordinary enough to be approachable, but more interactive than the lower EX players around it.

Instead of trying to impress through materials or miniaturization, the EX39 feels built around compact moments of control. It sits in that very Sony early-1990s phase where sound customization was being pushed down into the middle of the range so everyday users could shape playback a little more actively without stepping into premium territory.
