WM-EK1

First Widdit
WM-EK1

The WM-EK1 is part of Sony's casual Widdit series launched under the 1998 PUNK.II project, and it looked nothing like the traditional serious Walkman by that point. Its translucent orange body was built from lightweight plastic and includes a carry clip so it could hang from a bag or belt instead of disappear into a pocket. Despite the playful presentation, it still offers a fairly complete cassette feature set for the class, including auto-reverse, Dolby B noise reduction, Mega Bass, automatic tape selection, and logic-controlled transport keys, all powered by two AA batteries. The supplied remote was unusually shaped and clearly built to feel like part of the object instead of an afterthought.

This model shows Sony fully accepting cassette as a casual personal accessory instead of a prestige format. By 1998 the company was no longer pretending every Walkman needed to signal seriousness or fidelity. The EK1 works because it leans into portability, color, and carry behavior first, while still keeping enough of the real Walkman formula underneath to feel complete.
