D-340

The D-340 is part of the last non-ESP portable CD players Sony shipped in 1995, keeping standard playback, Mega Bass, and a clean layout in a deliberately simple compact body. It still behaved like a fully mechanical Discman from an earlier phase of the line, even though the market around it was already moving toward something more tolerant of movement.

That contrast is what makes the D-340 interesting. It arrived at the point when the rest of the category had already started redefining what acceptable portable CD behavior looked like. In that sense, it feels slightly out of time the moment it appears.
