The WM-FX33 is a radio Walkman that pushed sound customization further than many of its peers by combining Mega Bass with separate low and high tone controls. Alongside that, it offers auto-reverse playback, anti-rolling support, a manual FM/AM tuner, and manual tape selection inside a plastic two-AA body with cassette window and belt clip. This model stayed accessible and fairly ordinary in construction, but clearly invited more active sound shaping than the simpler FX models around it.
FX33 is most useful as a sign of how it suggests Sony still exploring how much sonic agency it could give everyday listeners without moving them into premium territory. Separate tone controls on a mainstream radio Walkman are not revolutionary, but they change the feel of the object. This one reads less of a passive playback device and more like something meant to be adjusted and lived with.
