The WM-F701T is a limited-edition anniversary radio Walkman created in collaboration with Tiffany & Co., produced in a silver-plated commemorative form in very compact numbers. Underneath, it remained a functioning FM/AM radio cassette player, but the point here was clearly not mass-market portability. The silver finish and restrained luxury treatment transformed the machine from a routine listening device into something closer to a celebratory object.
The F701T captures how far the Walkman had traveled culturally by 1989. Sony could now take an everyday portable audio product and elevate it into a collectible luxury item simply because the brand itself had acquired that much symbolic weight. It is less of a gadget and closer to a commemorative artifact.
