The WM-170 is a compact playback-only Walkman from Sony's 1989 17X entry series, built around a metal frame and plastic outer body with a modest footprint and a more modern feature set than its price point might suggest. It combined auto-reverse, Dolby B noise reduction, Dynamic Bass Boost, an EX Amorphous head, and a manual tape selector, while keeping operation straightforward through mechanical controls and a compact LED indicator. Power came from standard batteries with optional DC input, keeping it practical and uncomplicated.
This model shows how polished even Sony's lower-end Walkman had become by the end of the decade. Nothing about the WM-170 is especially dramatic, but it offers enough refinement that an ordinary everyday player no longer had to feel stripped down or transitional. It is a budget model from a period when even the budget models had learned how to behave properly.
