WM-F2078

The WM-F2078 is a Sports Walkman that brought digital control into Sony's ruggedized branch by replacing analog radio handling with a digital AM/FM tuner and adding an integrated alarm clock. Its sealed yellow body omitted a cassette window, relying instead on more electronic feedback than the visibly mechanical Sports models that came before it, while auto-reverse, Dolby B noise reduction, and waterproof construction kept it aligned with active use. The whole machine feels more electronically mediated than the earlier Sports Walkman.

F2078 is revealing because it suggests the Sports line entering a new phase. This was no longer simply a tough cassette player with bright plastic and radio added on, but a more digitally managed outdoor portable shaped around convenience, precision, and routine use. Here the Sports Walkman was becoming a proper early-1990s product family instead of an offshoot.
