WM-EX80

The WM-EX80 is a compact EX-series playback Walkman that reused the proven mechanical base of the earlier WM-702 while updating the interface around it. It retained auto-reverse, Dolby B, Extended Dynamic Bass Boost, and the EX Amorphous head, but added a visible tape window and an LCD-equipped remote that displayed playback status and includes a built-in clock. Quick charging and optional external power support rounded out a package that was less about reinventing the transport than improving how users interacted with it.

What makes the EX80 notable is that it treats visibility and feedback as part of the product instead of an afterthought. By 1990 Sony already had plenty of reliable compact cassette platforms, so the real room for improvement was often in how much information and control the user had without touching the player itself. It is a machine from the point when interface polish started mattering almost as much as the mechanism.
