The D-99 is a high-end portable CD player featuring a metal casing and a 1-bit conversion circuit. It uses a high-output amplifier circuit and an enhanced audio output system. The exterior is made of aluminum. Playback remains within the range of a standard CD player, and it does not have vibration damping. It is positioned as a high-end model prioritizing audio output and exterior quality.
Sony's move toward 1-bit digital audio conversion began with the D-99.
It kept the compact aluminum layout of the D-90 but introduced a new internal design built around a single-bit converter, a system that offered smoother playback and lower distortion while keeping power demands modest.
Positioned just below the D-Z555, it became a strong option for listeners who wanted high-quality sound without the complexity of the flagship model.
The enclosure mixed metal and plastic with a clean lid, a rear assist lever for loading, and a top display that glowed orange when running from AC power.
