WM-EX512

The WM-EX512 is a higher-end EX-series playback Walkman built in Japan around a compact metal body and a much more electronically managed control system than the simpler models below it. It combined auto-reverse, Dolby B noise reduction, logic controls with hold lock, AMS music search, blank skip, remote-control support, automatic tape selection, AVLS, and extended bass enhancement, all powered from a single AA cell with rechargeable and dual-voltage charging options available. This model was clearly meant to feel efficient and self-contained.

the late cassette Walkman was starting to behave closer to a disciplined travel electronic than a simple tape player. Remote support, search, charging flexibility, and automatic handling all point toward a machine built for people who already knew exactly what they wanted from portable cassette. It comes across as a mature object from the final serious phase of the format.
