The WM-AF79 is a rugged Sports radio Walkman associated with Sony's Outback series, built around a water-resistant and drop-tolerant body intended for harsher outdoor conditions than the ordinary AF line. It combined FM/AM reception with auto-reverse playback, manual tape selection, and sport earphones inside a matte gray body that looked and felt more purposeful than the brighter mainstream Sports models. This model clearly emphasized reliability over polish.
With the AF79, you can see Sony still maintaining a genuinely tougher sub-branch within the Sports family even as much of the category softened into broader lifestyle use. It was more than "sports-colored" packaging; this was a machine meant to survive rougher environments than the average portable. It reads closer to a serious outdoor offshoot of the Walkman idea.
