The NW-E3 is the first Network Walkman to feature built-in flash memory. It has 64MB of internal storage and supports ATRAC format audio playback. It has an LCD display and can be powered by a single AA battery.
The NW-E3 marked the first shift of the Walkman line to fully solid-state playback, replacing mechanical media with flash memory in a compact, pocketable form. It introduced a new direction for portable audio built around instant access and silent operation.
The hardware reflected this early stage. A slim plastic bar with minimal controls, a strap loop, and a lightweight structure defined its physical presence, with a single AAA battery contributing most of its weight.
The design remained simple and functional, without additional features or ornamentation. Storage was limited to 64 megabytes, but flash memory provided immediate playback and stable operation without mechanical noise or skipping.
Software defined the limits more than the hardware.
