The NW-E005 is a high-capacity Network Walkman part of the 7th generation E series. It has 2GB of built-in flash memory and supports audio playback in MP3, ATRAC, ATRAC3, ATRAC3plus, WMA, and AAC formats. It features an OLED display and is powered by a lithium-ion battery.
The NW-E005 was positioned as the top model in Sony's compact USB-style Walkman lineup, designed for direct plug-and-play use without cables or cradles. A built-in USB connector, hidden under a removable cap, allowed straightforward music transfer and reflected a shift toward simplified digital workflows.
The construction distinguished it from typical USB players of the period. An anodized aluminum body with a bead-blasted finish provided a more rigid and durable structure than the lightweight plastic designs commonly used in this category.
Despite its small size, the E005 operated as a full-featured Walkman. The OLED display remained clear, navigation was responsive, and the digital amplifier delivered stable playback with a balanced sound profile.
File transfer became the focus.
