The NW-A25HN is a 9th-generation A Series model with 16 GB storage supporting MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, and Linear PCM playback. A lithium-ion battery provides up to 50 hours of use with digital noise cancellation. Earphones were bundled.

The HN variant is best understood as a packaging branch of the same compact high-resolution A platform instead of a separate step in the line. The player's real importance stays the same: this was part of the generation where the A Series became much easier to place in Sony's lineup. The bundled earphone angle changes the presentation, but not the role.
