The DD-S35 is an updated Data Discman e-book reader from 1992 that continued Sony's experiment with optical text storage on 8 cm discs. It featured a larger screen, keyboard, and support for newer titles while still running on standard AA batteries, giving it a level of portability and self-containment that made sense for its niche even if the audience remained narrow.
Music Discmans had already become ordinary by then, but Sony is still pushing optical media into non-audio territory at the same time. The DD-S35 is part of the same alternate future as the DD-1, where compact disc was being treated as a portable information format instead of just an audio carrier. It never became the dominant path, but it is not a random detour either.
