The WM-RX822 is the recording-focused counterpart to the GX822, built on the same advanced cassette platform but without the radio tuner section. It retained timer recording, tape-speed adjustment, auto-reverse in both playback and record modes, Dolby B noise reduction, Mega Bass, a backlit LCD remote, and an includes external stereo microphone with stand, all organized around an easy sliding-dial control system. Without the tuner hardware, the machine read more clearly as a dedicated portable recorder than a multi-source hybrid.
What makes the RX822 important is that it shows Sony still treating portable recording as its own branch worth refining even this late in the cassette era. Not every serious tape user needed broadcast features, and the RX822 is a cleaner, more direct tool for people focused on capturing and managing sound itself. It is part of the more serious Walkman of the period.
