The WM-EX3 is a practical midrange EX-series playback Walkman that built on the earlier EX2 with a slightly more complete late-era feature set. It offers auto-reverse playback, Dolby B noise reduction, Mega Bass, and 36x AMS search for faster track skipping, all housed in a compact metal-framed body with an external battery compartment. Sony also gave it flexible power options, allowing the player to run from a gumstick rechargeable cell, a single AA battery, or both together for extended runtime.
What stands out about the EX3 notable is not that it tried to reinvent the Walkman, but that it shows how much capability had filtered into the middle of the range by then. This is the sort of machine built for ordinary daily use instead of for display or experimentation, but it still carries enough refinement to feel distinctly late-Sony. It is a mature commuter-era cassette player instead of a stripped-down budget piece.
