MZ-R4ST

The MZ-R4ST is a docking-type MiniDisc system that separates portability from a full-fledged recording environment. The slim, portable unit alone supports basic recording and playback, while connecting to the dedicated docking station expands its digital and analog connectivity and editing capabilities. When docked, optical input, line input/output, more precise editing point adjustment, and an undo function become available. In standalone use, it offers a configuration focused on basic portable functions, while with the dock it functions as a recording environment similar to a stationary deck.

The MZ-R4ST introduced the "MD Base" concept by pairing a compact portable recorder with a desktop station that added home-style features. The handheld unit was smaller and lighter than earlier models and handled basic mic recording on its own, while the station supplied line inputs, editing tools, track organization, and cable-free docking. Dual screens on the unit and remote supported Japanese text, and the recorder ran for several hours on lithium or AA batteries. The station added a large backlit display, easier text entry, stereo connections, and spare battery charging, creating a system that linked portable and home MiniDisc use in a single setup.
