WM-552

WM-552

The WM-552 is a compact playback Walkman built around practical everyday handling instead of added features, most notably through a dedicated rear compartment for storing headphones when not in use. It supports metal tapes via a selector switch and includes auto-reverse playback plus Dolby B noise reduction, all housed in a compact plastic body with a visible cassette window and simple mechanical controls. The overall machine evolved from earlier compact playback models by focusing on portability and tidiness instead of trying to become more elaborate.

Sony was refining the everyday experience of carrying a Walkman instead of simply adding more functions to it. By 1988, cassette players were already part of daily routine, and convenience details like cable storage mattered more than they might have a few years earlier. It was a machine built for use first and display second.
