The WM-52 is a compact playback-only cassette Walkman from 1988 that sat comfortably in Sony's practical middle range, combining auto-reverse, Dolby B noise reduction, and a manual tape selector in a straightforward portable body. Its most distinctive physical detail was the flat rear cover built to store the headphone cable neatly against the player, reducing clutter without resorting to a full retractable mechanism. Inside, a metal frame stiffened the plastic shell, while power could come from either a standard AA battery or a slimmer gumstick rechargeable setup.
This model shows Sony refining the ordinary Walkman instead of trying to reinvent it. By 1988, convenience itself had become a meaningful feature, and the WM-52 feels built around the compact annoyances of everyday use instead of around spectacle or novelty. It sits within the broad center of the lineup where the Walkman had already become normal enough to simply be useful.
