WM-102

The WM-102 is one of Sony's cassette-case-sized playback models for 1986, built around a pressed-metal chassis and compact internals that keep it exceptionally small without abandoning everyday features. Auto-reverse enables continuous playback, Dolby B reduces hiss, and the slim body supports Sony's gumstick rechargeable system through an external battery compartment. A compact cassette window and minimal controls keep the emphasis squarely on portability rather than display or embellishment.

Sony was still pursuing the smallest practical expression of a fully featured Walkman. The WM-102 was not trying to impress through extras so much as through absence: no wasted bulk, no unnecessary complexity, just a player reduced almost to cassette scale. It makes the miniaturization race of the mid-1980s feel tangible in the hand.
