The D-V8000 adapted the Discman form for Video CD playback by adding video decoding hardware, output connections, and a larger body to support the extra circuitry while still retaining audio CD compatibility. It is clearly no longer a normal music portable, but it still grew out of the same basic logic of personal optical playback.
This is part of the period when optical disc formats were still being pushed in several directions at once before the market settled more narrowly. The D-V8000 made perfect sense for a short time, even if Video CD never became a widespread portable standard in the same way audio CD had. That is what gives it its place.
