The D-E301 marked the start of Sony nudging portable CD toward a lighter, more lifestyle-oriented identity while still keeping ESP, Mega Bass, and AVLS in a practical mid-range body. Even the naming and general feel already hinted at the softer, less mechanical design language that would shape more of the line soon after.
This sits right at the transition away from the older Discman era. The D-E301 still behaves like a solid mid-1990s portable, but you can already see the line leaning toward a more casual and less hardware-forward personality. That makes it a useful hinge model.
