The D-465 is a portable CD player equipped with an electronic anti-skip mechanism and optical digital output. It supports playback stabilization via ESP and features Mega Bass and basic CD playback. It supports connection to external devices through its output. While designed for portable use, it can also connect to stationary equipment. It is positioned as a mid-range model balancing portability and connectivity.
Sony advanced its skip-protection approach with the D-465 by replacing the short, compressed buffers of earlier Discman models with a twenty-second reserve that stored audio in its original form. The player read ahead at high speed, filling a longer buffer that kept playback steady even after extended movement, giving it a noticeably smoother response than units built around smaller memory systems.
The housing reinforced this mobile focus. The lid used an aluminum panel, and a sliding hold shutter covered the control cluster to prevent accidental input.
Both the main unit and the inline remote carried EL-backlit LCDs for low-light use. A 3.5 mm optical output provided a direct digital path to recorders or DACs without relying on larger home-audio connectors.
Long playback times made it practical for daily use. Weight remained manageable at roughly 225 grams with batteries installed.
