The WM-WE01 was a wireless cassette Walkman released as part of Sony's 20th Anniversary lineup and the final model in the company's long-running wireless experiment. It used an RF transmission system with separate transmitter and receiver components, allowing fully cable-free listening while retaining a late-period feature set that included Dolby B/C noise reduction, Mega Bass, automatic music sensor, and AVLS. The cassette transport itself was stable and mature, reflecting years of refinement beneath the wireless layer.
This model feels less like an evolution than a closing gesture. Sony had spent almost a decade exploring what a wireless Walkman could be, and the WE01 gathers that entire idea into a final, fully equipped form. It stands at the edge of the cassette era, just before the company's attention shifted decisively toward digital and networked portable audio.
The WM-WE01 appeared on July 1, 1999, as part of Sony's twentieth-anniversary Walkman lineup. It refined Sony's cordless cassette concept with a cleaner late-nineties exterior and GROOVE bass, continuing the idea of a compact player that transmitted audio to a wireless receiver for cable-free listening.
Its short-range link was tuned for stable transmission to cordless headphones, and Sony paired the system with a clip-on remote that made the setup feel more like an accessory-driven listening kit than a standard Walkman.
Auto Reverse, AMS track skip, Dolby B, logic control, and AVLS rounded out the feature set, keeping the WE01 aligned with Sony's higher-end cassette models even as its cordless design stood apart.
