WM-PA1

Speaker Only PA
WM-PA1

The WM-PA1 is a larger portable cassette Walkman with a built-in speaker mounted into the door, plus FM/AM radio reception, AVLS, and a manual tape selector in a standing body powered by two AA batteries. The speaker changed the basic logic of the machine by allowing casual listening without headphones, pushing it away from purely personal stereo behavior and toward lighter shared use. The layout remained straightforward and fairly relaxed.

This is less of a classic Walkman and closer to a hybrid between a personal cassette player and a tiny casual room portable. That is what makes it useful. The PA1 suggests Sony was stretching the category slightly outward without abandoning the core cassette-and-radio form underneath.
