The WM-MY1 is a youth-oriented cassette Walkman whose notebook-like styling pushed it closer to a portable accessory than to a conventional late EX or FX machine. The body was compact and lightweight, the controls were simplified, and some versions includes auto-reverse and basic sound enhancement, but the real emphasis was on appearance, portability, and mood instead of on technical depth. It was a fashion-led cassette object.
A product like this only really makes sense once you stop reading the late Walkman story as a pure engineering story. The MY1 suggests Sony was using cassette as a social and stylistic product for younger buyers, more than as a technical format. That is exactly the point.
