WM-FX909

The WM-FX909 is Sony's flagship radio Walkman for 1992, combining the worldwide twin synthesizer tuner with the same dual fixed-head playback system uses in the top EX models. Separate heads for each tape direction preserved more consistent playback quality in both directions, while stamina battery circuitry extended runtime and the advanced remote added illuminated liquid-crystal controls. FM and AM travel presets, Dolby B, Extended Dynamic Bass Boost, and the slim premium body completed a machine that was trying to feel fully resolved from both the tuner and cassette sides.

This is one of those models where Sony was no longer content to keep its best playback engineering isolated from the radio branch. The FX909 is an attempt to collapse the high-end Walkman into a single complete form: serious cassette playback, serious radio flexibility, and a premium physical experience all in one object. It sits within the point when Sony was trying to make the flagship radio Walkman feel just as deliberate as the flagship pure-playback one.
