WM-FX505

The WM-FX505 is a compact radio Walkman built for the Japanese domestic market, notable for adding AM stereo capability to an otherwise straightforward midrange cassette-and-radio design. It combined auto-reverse playback, Dolby B noise reduction, Extended Dynamic Bass Boost, FM stereo reception, and a wired remote in a simple, deliberately unshowy body. Slide switches and restrained controls kept the machine compact and inexpensive while still aligning it with local broadcast habits.

This model reflects how region-specific the Walkman still was even in the early 1990s. Sony was more than making one global radio cassette player and shipping it everywhere, but tailoring midrange models around the realities of local broadcast standards and daily listening habits. The FX505 feels modest, but very specific to where it was meant to live.
