The WM-F606 merged Sony's wireless cassette concept with a built-in AM/FM tuner, splitting the system across a main cassette unit and a separate receiver that also handled much of the radio control. The cassette body itself remained relatively simple, focused on playback and RF transmission, while the receiver acted as both audio output and tuner interface. This distributed layout kept the player compact even as the overall system became more capable.
This model treats portability less as a single object and more as a compact ecosystem. Sony is clearly experimenting with how much functionality could be moved off the player itself once wireless listening became part of the equation. It feels unusual now, but it also hints at a later world where controls, receivers, and playback hardware would increasingly stop living in one place.
