The WM-EX511 is a super-slim EX-series playback Walkman built around a tightly packaged logic-controlled mechanism that kept the body just over two centimeters thick while still supporting a relatively full late-cassette feature set. It includes auto-reverse, Dolby B noise reduction, Extended DBB, AVLS, Automatic Music Sensor, blank skip, repeat playback, and automatic tape-type selection, with four large chromed buttons on the main unit mirrored by controls on the includes wired remote. The overall layout remained conventional, but the machine itself was clearly engineered around compactness and ease of use.
This model reflects Sony bringing deck-like convenience into a very compressed everyday portable. By 1994, the challenge was no longer simply making a Walkman slim, but making it slim without losing the responsive behavior users had started to expect from CD players and higher-end cassette models. The EX511 is one of those competent players built to disappear into daily life.
