The WM-EX49 is part of the more refined early EX-series playback Walkman, using a compact metal-bodied chassis and a pressed-metal cassette door to give the machine a noticeably more resolved feel than the plastic models below it. It combined auto-reverse, Dolby B noise reduction, anti-rolling support, Mega Bass, an EX head, and manual tape selection, all powered by a single AA battery to keep the body compact and efficient. The lid-mounted head assembly and compressed proportions made it feel tightly engineered instead of merely styled.
EX49 makes clear how the EX prefix was still carrying a more premium meaning before the name later broadened across much of the lineup. This was a player where finish, size, and feature balance were all being treated seriously at once. It was one of the early EX machines that still had a little ambition in it.
