WM-EX13

The WM-EX13 is part of the lowest-end models in Sony's early EX lineup, built around a simple two-AA playback mechanism with Dolby B noise reduction as its main upgrade over the most stripped versions of the format. It includes an anti-rolling mechanism, manual tape selector, cassette window, and belt clip inside a lightweight plastic body assembled in Malaysia. There was no auto-reverse, no Mega Bass, and no attempt to make the machine feel more elaborate than it really was.

The EX13 suggests how the EX name was beginning to function not simply as a premium signifier, but also as a broader structural family that could stretch down into the everyday and inexpensive end of the range. It was not a glamorous Walkman, but it helped normalize Dolby-equipped playback at the lower end of the line. It was a very clear early-1990s baseline machine.
