WM-68

WM-68

The WM-68 is the North American-market version of the WM-38, carrying the same low-cost Dolby-equipped playback hardware into US and Canadian retail channels with revised colors, labeling, and regional presentation. It retained the same plastic construction, two-AA power setup, and basic playback mechanism while using the familiar Sony practice of re-identifying essentially identical hardware across markets. This model itself remained simple and inexpensive.

The WM-68 matters less for hardware changes than for the way it reveals Sony's growing confidence in regional segmentation. Sony was now comfortable keeping one platform alive under multiple identities if it helped fit local pricing and distribution. That sort of invisible adaptation helped the line spread.
