WM-38

The WM-38 is a low-cost playback Walkman that added Dolby B noise reduction to Sony's basic 1987 budget platform without significantly changing the rest of the design. It uses the familiar two-AA power system, simple transport, and lightweight plastic shell, often finished in softer pastel colors that give it a friendlier visual identity than some of the more neutral models in the same class. Playback remains straightforward and feature-light outside the Dolby circuit.

Dolby kept moving further down the range without remaining a premium signifier. It was not a glamorous model, but it sits within a transitional phase where better playback quality was becoming normalized for more everyday buyers. One of those compact, competent Walkman models that helped make the category feel mature.
