WM-609

WM-609

The WM-609 shared most of its hardware with the WM-607, including the compact body, auto-reverse transport, Dolby B noise reduction, EX Amorphous head, Dynamic Bass Boost, logic control, and inline remote. What distinguished it is not a different feature set so much as a slightly different presentation, including styling and carry accessories that pushed it into a more lifestyle-oriented version of the same basic machine. Underneath, it remained a playback-only Walkman built around the same practical late-1980s formula.

This model reflects how carefully Sony had begun segmenting even the middle of the range once the core technology had stabilized. The WM-609 is not there to change what the player did, but how it fit into a buyer's preferences and self-image. That kind of compact differentiation becomes much more common once a product category is mature enough that identity can do some of the work.
