The WM-607 is a mass-market playback Walkman from 1989 that paired auto-reverse, Dolby B noise reduction, and three-stage Dynamic Bass Boost with a cable-mounted remote control and rechargeable gumstick battery system. It uses a compact metal-framed plastic body, an EX Amorphous head, and logic-controlled electronic switches instead of purely mechanical transport keys, giving it a more modern operational feel than many earlier midrange models. The remote made it easy to use without pulling the player from a pocket or bag.
This is exactly the kind of model that defined the late Walkman as a daily-use object instead of a piece of novelty hardware. Sony was not trying to wow buyers with one giant leap here, but by stacking enough useful refinements together that the player simply fit more naturally into movement, commuting, and routine use. The WM-607 is the point when convenience had become the product.
