The WM-3060 is a My First Sony cassette player built for children and based closely on the simpler WM-3000 platform, but with one especially revealing addition: a built-in loudspeaker mounted directly into the cassette door. That speaker allowed open playback without headphones, while a headphone jack switch automatically muted it for more private listening. The sturdy red plastic body, enlarged rear viewing window, and visible moving mechanism made the machine feel more interactive and durable than technically ambitious, with manufacturing handled under license in Taiwan to keep it robust and affordable.
Sony was treating the Walkman less as a single youth-culture object and more as a flexible family of listening behaviors. It was not about portability for commuting or fidelity for enthusiasts, but about making cassette approachable and physically legible for children. It reads closer to a simplified educational offshoot of the broader Walkman idea.
