MZ-E50

MZ-E50

The MZ-E50 is a model that achieves a slim profile while maintaining rigidity by employing a die-cast magnesium casing. It is a model that demonstrates the shift in MiniDisc player design from being function-centric to prioritizing texture and overall finish. While the playback functions themselves are standard, the user experience is elevated in terms of both size and build quality. Both the main unit and the remote control have LCDs, and the controls are well-organized. Power is supplied by both rechargeable batteries and AA batteries.

The MZ-E50 marked a shift in MiniDisc design by becoming one of the thinnest and lightest players of its time, pushing the format toward a more modern, portable form. It reflected a move away from earlier, bulkier units toward designs built for everyday carry.

Sony achieved this reduction through the use of magnesium and titanium components, a smaller motor, and more efficient circuitry. The low-power design allowed the unit to run for extended periods on a single AA battery or a rechargeable cell, with partial charging supporting quick reuse.
