The MZ-NH1 was introduced as the flagship recorder during the early stages of Hi-MD's development, featuring full recording capabilities and a highly rigid aluminum casing. Equipped with microphone input, line input, and optical input, it supports both analog and direct digital recording without the need for a PC. Hi-MD expanded recording capacity, and multiple recording modes, including Linear PCM, were available. USB transfer support also provided greater flexibility in file management compared to previous models. With a configuration that allows for recording, editing, and transfer all in one unit, the dense feel of the metal body contributes to its flagship-like finish.
The MZ-NH1 introduced Hi-MD as a new phase of the MiniDisc format, expanding recording quality, storage capacity, and computer integration. It was designed to demonstrate the format's full potential, combining higher-fidelity recording with more flexible data handling than earlier MiniDisc systems.
The chassis used a magnesium alloy shell with a compact, rigid layout, giving the unit a firm and controlled structure. The jog dial, transport keys, and menu system followed established MiniDisc patterns, allowing the transition to Hi-MD to remain familiar in daily use.
Hi-MD enabled linear PCM recording, high-bitrate ATRAC3plus, and support for one-gigabyte discs, along with expanded capacity when standard MiniDiscs were reformatted. The updated mechanism handled higher-density media efficiently, and USB transfers moved beyond real-time limitations.
Power was managed through a slim rechargeable cell and a desktop charging cradle, maintaining stable operation despite increased processing demands. The hardware moved forward faster than the software around it.
