MZ-E44

The MZ-E44 was a MiniDisc player that prioritized a balance between portability and ease of use. It featured a curved control surface and buttons positioned along the body's contours, resulting in a user-friendly interface even while holding the device. Playback functions were standard, including basic anti-skip features. The backlit remote control displayed track information and supported various operations. Power was primarily supplied by a gum-type rechargeable battery, and AA batteries were also supported when using the external case.

Sony gave the MiniDisc lineup a more expressive side with the MZ-E44 and MZ-E45, two slim playback models defined by bright colors and active styling. Their 17.8-millimeter frames were easy to pocket, but their finishes were meant to stand out: the E44 used rounded edges and sparkling surfaces, while the E45 adopted sharper lines and bold tones like Sunrise Orange. Both came with matching straps and a backlit stick remote, reinforcing their role as casual, on-the-move players.

MiniDisc with personality, shaped for color, movement, and everyday carry. Inside, they followed the dependable late-1990s MiniDisc pattern: a ten-second buffer for stable motion playback, consistent ATRAC decoding, and optional S-XBS or Mega Bass for low-end emphasis. AVLS, standard play modes, and the MT-MZE44-140 mechanism completed the behavior.

Battery flexibility stayed central, with a quick-charging gumstick for short trips and an AA pack for longer use. With no functional differences between them, the two models separated themselves purely through design. The E44 favored smooth metallic colors, while the E45 presented a more angular, athletic look, giving buyers a choice between two personalities built on the same lightweight foundation.

MiniDisc with personality, shaped for color, movement, and everyday carry. Sony expanded its Beans lineup in 1998 with two playful additions. The WM-EQ7 used a soft, rubber-touch shell and matching strap, keeping the series' focus on casual, tactile design.
