The MZ-B3 is a voice recording-focused model that expands the MiniDisc format from music to voice recording. Equipped with a built-in mono microphone and speaker, it allows for recording and playback without external devices. The recording function is optimized for conversations and note-taking, featuring voice-activated recording start/stop, high-speed playback mode, and position indicator. It lacks line input and optical input, and its editing functions are simplified, not supporting title input or advanced track management. It uses standard batteries and rechargeable batteries, and is designed as a standalone voice recorder.
The MZ-B3 was Sony's first MiniDisc recorder built specifically for business use, designed for interviews and meetings rather than music recording. It introduced a dedicated voice-recording configuration within the MiniDisc line, shifting the format toward professional and institutional use.
The unit combined a mono microphone, a small built-in speaker, and support for external stereo microphones under a solid magnesium cover with a large LCD. Fast-play modes, index marking, voice-activated recording, and optional foot-pedal control supported transcription workflows, while music-focused editing features were reduced or removed to simplify operation.
